UNS — Three students of Electrical Engineering Program Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta created innovation work in the form of automatic sorting bin as a form of concern of millennials on the waste problems in Indonesia. The three students are Rizal Mujaddid Irsyad, Annisa Larasati Febrianingrum, and Luqman Hadi.
Under the supervision of Feri Adriyanto, Ph.D who is a Faculty Member of Electrical Engineering Program FT UNS, they joined Student Creativity Program (PKM) 2020 from the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud). This year, they won Rp. 5 million funding. In a release received by uns.ac.id, Thursday (23/9/2020), Rizal Mujaddid Irsyad stated that the idea started from his concern on waste problems in Indonesia. This needs action at the root of the problem, which is people awareness on the importance of environmental cleanliness and is responsible for the waste they produced. “This is what initiate us to create this tool,” Rizal explained.
Rizal added that previously, a firm in India, BioEnable has developed Smart Bin Concepts for Smart City. However, the system they developed is only integrated with the garbage collection system. Even though the garbage in the garbage bin consists of various types of garbage. Sorting plastic and non-plastic, recycled waste and household waste needs to be handled differently.
Rizal explained that the advantages of this tool are to sort wastes automatically so that wastes can be processed according to its classification. Such as organic waste that can be processed into fertilizer, and non-organic waste and metal that can be recycled again.
Besides that, the tool is equipped with the Internet of Things (IoT) connected to a device or smartphone owned by the janitor. The technology is expected to assist janitor by showing the location of full garbage bin. It also assists the government in creating a good and healthy living environment. Humas UNS
