UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta received a 4-Star QS Rating from QS Quacquarelli Symonds. The certificate was presented directly by Mr. Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President of QS Quacquarelli Symonds, to the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., at the QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2023 held in Kuala Lumpur from Tuesday (7/11/2023) to Thursday (9/11/2023).
Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum. stated that QS Quacquarelli Symonds is a UK-based university ranking institution. As for QS STAR, it is a service by QS Quacquarelli Symonds for evaluating higher education institutions with more criteria than those used in the QS World University Rankings. QS STAR allows a rated university to identify strengths and areas that still need improvement. The QS STAR methodology includes four evaluated categories: core criteria, specialist criteria, learning environment, and advanced criteria. For core criteria, the evaluation is based on five aspects: teaching, employability, internationalization, research, and academic development. In terms of the learning environment, a university can choose between facilities or online learning. For specialist criteria, the university can select indicators from either subject ranking or program strength. Meanwhile, advanced criteria are measured with two out of four indicators: innovation, social responsibility, inclusiveness, and art & culture.

UNS’s achievement shows an improvement from the previous 3-Star rating in 2018. In this assessment, UNS overall received a 4-star rating, with a 5-star score obtained in the employability indicator, measured by the reputation among graduate users, the rate of graduate employment, and the career support activities conducted by the university. This result indicates that UNS graduates have a high employability rate and an excellent reputation among graduate users.
“This achievement is a contribution and the result of hard work and intelligence from the entire academic community at UNS. The QS-STAR assessment process is quite extensive, involving meticulous evaluation, audit, and analysis,” Prof. Jamal explained on Wednesday (8/11/2023).
In one of the sessions during the QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2023, the Acting Vice-Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Business, and Information UNS, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, Ph.D., was one of the speakers sharing good practices related to the improvement of the university’s international reputation.
